Catering is one of the most liability-exposed businesses in the food industry. You're cooking off-site, transporting hot food, setting up at venues you don't control, serving large groups, and often handling alcohol. Every event is a different location with different risks.
Coverage Cowboy builds catering insurance packages that account for this mobile, high-touch operation. We cover your kitchen, your equipment in transit, your team on-site, and your liability to clients, guests, and venue owners.
Whether you run a full-service catering operation, a drop-off service, or a personal chef business doing private events, we'll build a policy that matches how you work — not how a generic restaurant works.
Frequently asked questions
Absolutely. Catering involves food service, alcohol handling, working at client venues, transporting equipment, and managing staff at off-site locations — all of which carry significant liability risk. Most venues, event planners, and corporate clients require proof of insurance before they'll hire you. At minimum, you need general liability and workers' compensation. We strongly recommend commercial auto, property coverage for your equipment, and liquor liability if you serve alcohol.
Standard general liability does not cover alcohol-related incidents. If you serve alcohol at events — even beer and wine — you need a separate liquor liability policy. This covers you if a guest becomes intoxicated at your event and injures someone or causes property damage afterward. Many venues require it as a condition of booking. If you hold your own liquor license or serve under the client's license, the requirements may differ — we'll make sure you're covered either way.
We issue certificates of insurance (COIs) quickly — usually same-day. When a venue or client needs to be listed as an additional insured on your policy, we handle the endorsement and send the certificate directly to them. This is one of the most common requests we get from caterers, and we've streamlined the process so it doesn't slow down your bookings. You can request certificates by phone or email anytime.
Your general liability policy covers food-borne illness claims. If a guest gets sick and attributes it to your food, GL covers their medical expenses, your legal defense, and any settlement or judgment. Products-completed operations coverage (included in most GL policies) specifically addresses claims arising from food you've prepared and served. Having proper coverage means a single incident doesn't threaten your entire business.
